Summer is almost here. You’re likely looking forward to a road trip, going boating on the lake, taking a beach vacation, and going to cookouts. Here are a few summer tips to help you avoid an accident as shared by a truck accident lawyer.

On The Road

If you’re hitting the road this summer, here are a few tips to help you avoid an accident:

  • Always obey the speed limit. According to the National Safety Council, approximately 29% of fatalities are caused by speeding.
  • Make sure that you obey all road signs, including road construction signs. The National Institute of Health, running a stop sign is responsible for 70% of all car accidents.
  • Slow down when necessary. Be it road construction, speed zone, or rain, slowing down to the proper speed could very well keep you alive.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. This can help protect you if you’re involved in a car accident.
  • Avoid distractions such as eating while driving or looking at your phone while behind the wheel. Ask your passengers to help monitor your phone, or pull over for important notifications.
  • Your rule should be to pull over. Emergency? Pull over. Phone call you need to answer? Pull over. Remember, it’s not just you on the road.

At The Lake Or Beach

If you’re headed to the lake or beach, make sure that you protect yourself by:

  • Using your sunscreen as described by current best practices. Doing so could help reduce the likelihood that you’ll develop skin cancer.
  • If you’re going boating, always wear a life jacket.  Even if you’re a good swimmer, currents can be deadly.
  • If you are going out onto the water in a boat, say no to alcohol. Not only could alcohol take away your inhibitions, but it could also result in deadly situations.
  • Go with a buddy so that you are accountable for each other. Make sure everyone is watching out for each other while having fun on the water.
  • Don’t speed or pull crazy stunts. Not only do you have to keep other boaters in mind but also potential swimmers.
  • Stay hydrated. You might feel like because you are surrounded by water that you do not need to drink water, but that is false. Be sure to drink plenty of water and seek out shade during the hottest parts of the day to stay cool.

At The Cookout

According to our friends at Herschensohn Law Firm, PLLC, if you’re hosting a cookout, you can protect yourself by:

  • Checking over your property for any tripping or slipping hazards. Doing so could help ensure that you and all of your guests are safe.
  • Using fireworks appropriately. Remember to follow the instructions to safely enjoy the fireworks.
  • Watch children and party goers around open flames or hot objects such as grills.

Stay Safe This Summer!

Hopefully, you adopt these safety practices. We want you to stay safe this summer! However, injuries can happen no matter how prepared or safe you plan to be. If you or someone you love is injured this summer due to another person’s negligence, contact a lawyer near you for help.
